【041】释疑：牛津现代英汉双解大词典（第 12 版）

近日，海笛科技（ aka 海词、明数数字出版）继《新牛津英汉双解大词典》（第 2 版）、《朗文当代高级英语辞典》（英英·英汉双解）（第 5 版）之后，又推出了《牛津现代英汉双解大词典》（第 12 版）app ，三个 app 定价如下：

• ￥98 《新牛津英汉双解大词典》（第 2 版）
• ￥98 《朗文当代高级英语辞典》（英英·英汉双解）（第 5 版）
• ￥168 《牛津现代英汉双解大词典》（第 12 版）
  

那么《牛津现代英汉双解大词典》究竟是怎样的词典？让我一一道来。

《牛津现代英汉双解大词典》出版小史，我这里将其蓝本 Concise Oxford English Dictionary 缩写为 COD/COED ：

需要注意的是，《牛津高阶英语词典》（OALD，Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary）早期双解版本的名字里，也曾有“现代”二字。如：

不过，后来授权商务印书馆出版的第 4、6、7、8 版 OALD 双解，统一命名《牛津高阶英汉双解词典》，不再有“现代”二字。现在《牛津现代英汉双解大词典》特指 COED 的双解版。

《牛津现代英汉双解大词典》之所以名字里有个“大”字，是因为它是一本母语型词典，收词量比学习型《牛津高阶英汉双解词典》要多，当然，例句、语用信息要少，毕竟目标受众不同。

看官方介绍：

Babylon Premium Dictionaries 里提供了 Concise Oxford English Dictionary and Thesaurus Package，其中 COED 系第 11 版，根据统计，headword 数是 78754 ，相比 OALD9 的掺了水的 60021 ，确实多了不少。

COD 是非常经典的词典，1911 年第 1 版由 Henry Watson Fowler 以及小他 12 岁的弟弟 Francis George Fowler 操刀，与当时仍在编的 Oxford English Dictionary 有千丝万缕的联系。这俩 Fowler 另有著作 The King’s English, A Dictionary of Modern English Usage 等 ，由于弟弟早逝（1918），COD2（1929） 以及 A Dictionary of Modern English Usage（1926）主要由 Henry Watson Fowler 完成。

H.W. Fowler 据说和《英语惯用法词典》作者葛传槼先生有段轶事。

说葛传槼最牛，那是《King’s English》字典主编 H.W. Fowler 在 1933 年说的，当时陆谷孙尚未出生。葛传槼给 Fowler 写信，挑出他字典里的几十处错误，Fowler回信称赞：
… your letter is in faultless English, and, long as it is, nowhere betrays, as nearly all foreigners’ letters do by some trifling lapse in idiom, that its writer is not an Englishman. I receive many letters in English from foreigners, but do not remember ever having had occasion to say this before.（大意为：你的信用完全无误的英语写成，并且，虽然很长，没有一处透露出来你的英语非母语，大多非英语母语的外国人的信都有一些习语上的细微错误。我收到了很多外国人用英语写的信，不记得哪一次能有机会说出我跟你说的这些话。）

这段轶事其实除了证明葛老先生的厉害，更证明 H.W. Fowler 的权威地位。

一本词典，能出到第 12 版，这本身就是其生命力、高质量的证明。不过，从前面“出版小史”我们可以看出， 1999 年是个坎，COD 变身 COED10 ，系 1998 年新出的基于语料库编纂的 New Oxford Dictionary of English 的简编本。我们来对比一下：

单从 dictionary 条就可以看出，《牛津现代英汉双解大词典》（第 12 版）和《新牛津英汉双解大词典》（第 2 版）的英文释义，还是很相似的。

所以，我个人觉得，从实用角度讲，如果已经花了 ￥98 购买了《新牛津英汉双解大词典》（第 2 版），再花 ￥168 购买其真子集《牛津现代英汉双解大词典》（第 12 版），难免有点重复购买、吃亏上当之嫌。

不过，每本词典都有其独特之处，Concise Oxford English Dictionary 可以说是提取了 Oxford Dictionary of English 的精华、常用部分；《牛津现代英汉双解大词典》（第 12 版）删减了大量来自真实语料的例句，故本身翻译难度比《新牛津英汉双解大词典》（第 2 版）要低，整体感觉更简明。

COD 堪称衍生词典最多的词典，以它为蓝本，出版了 n 本词典，如：

我所得益的一部英文字典
字典的东西，从来未听见人说可当做有趣的读物，或做消夏的读品，更难使人所有眷恋，不忍释卷。然而我对于《简明牛津英文字典》（Concise Oxford Dictionary）及《袖珍牛津英文字典》（Pocket Oxford Dictionary），确有此种感想，而且自从二十年前初次相识之后，以至如今，眷恋之念，未尝少减。初十年钟情于《简明》，至《袖珍》出现，则又移爱于后者。十年以来，无论家居、远游，确乎不曾一日无此书。因《袖珍》名符其实，不满盈握，携带便利。既可开卷有益，自不妨于行李夹袋中，留出两双袜子的空位，来放这本不可须臾离的枕中秘。而且在我几年教书的经验中，确乎单单倚靠这本《袖珍》，作为疑难时的参考，除去少数生僻罕用的美国俚语外，不曾使我碰壁，也可见此书确能将现代通行文字收罗无遗了。又因其卷帙如此之小，反可找到通常较大字典所无的字，又能得到通常字典所不能给我的消息，自然益发佩服作者体例之善，搜罗之富，用功之勤，考察之精，因佩服而敬爱，因敬爱而恋恋不舍了。

1911 年，首版 COD，1914 年左右，林语堂“初次相识” COD，1924 年，首版 POD 出版，林语堂“移爱于后者”，十年以来，“这本不可须臾离的枕中秘”。
