It was a great week for software sales forthree of Japan's major publishers. Namco-Bandai saw strong sales onPSP, Konami saw strong sales on PS2 and PSP, and Square-Enix saw strongsales on DS and Wii.

Summary:

After weeks of sharp declines, the Japanesesoftware market has rebounded sharply this week due to key releasesfrom Konami, Namco and Square-Enix. In the preliminary data for the toptwenty games sales were more than double the total of last week, atover 700,000 units. There were a few surprises too. The DS had onlyfive titles in the preliminary data. PSP had six titles in the data.Games were not as bunched together as usual either – while four titlessold over 100,000 units this week only one other title sold over 30,000units. The next two months should be quite interesting, with Star Ocean4, Resident Evil 5, Idol Master, Musou Orochi Z, and Dragon Quest IXreleasing in close proximity of one another.

Trends to Watch:

  Taikono Tatsujin Wii saw increased sales in the preliminary data and if itcontinues to sell steadily it will become the first third party Wiigame in Japan to top 500,000 since Dragon Quest Swords.

  Withthe software releasing for Xbox 360 and PS3 in the coming weeks, the HDmachines should top 1m and 3m respectively in Japan by June.

  WithRya go Gotaku 3 and Resident Evil 5 releasing in consecutive weeks, thePS3 could have its first two week period where its top game sold100,000 units or more each week since White Knight Chronicles andDynasty Warrior Gundam 2 did it over the weeks straddling the end of2008 and start of 2009

Understanding the Japanese Preview:
Rather than saying xgame for y platform sold between 20,000 and 28,000 units as in thepast, the preliminary data will be broken down into charts by platform.Within these charts, there will two additional categories besides therounded sales figure under ‘sales’. On the left will be ‘low end’depicting the lowest amount the title likely sold for the week, whileto the right will be ‘high end’ depicting the highest amount the titlelikely sold for the week. As always, this data is preliminary, andtherefore, not final, but it is based on a sample. The varying platformmarket share the sample represents is why consistent sellers like WiiFit do not always appear in the preliminary data. Sales for this report are for the week ending February 1, 2009
Software by Platform Breakdown:
Wii Software – Wii had four games in thepreliminary data. The re-release of Mario Tennis with motion controlscontinues to sell well, with 16,000 units sold this week.Namco-Bandai’s drumming game saw a slight rise in sales from last week,selling 31,000 units for the week. Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles:Echoes of Time from Square-Enix debuted at nearly 30,000 units.Turbulent Haruhi also sold another 8,000 units for the week. Expect Wiihardware sales to remain in the 20,000 to 30,000 unit range this week.

PS3 Software – PS3 had two games in thepreliminary data. Winning Eleven 2009 saw a boost with the release ofthe PSP and PS2 versions and sold another 10,000 units this week. TombRaider: Underworld also managed to sell 8,000 units this week. In theweeks when Street Fighter IV and Rya Ga Gotaku 3 release, PS3 has ashot at outselling Wii if the hardware sales can stay above 10,000units per week through late February. Expect PS3 hardware sales to dropinto the 10,000 to 18,000 unit range this week.

PSP Software – PSP had six games in thepreliminary data. Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology 2 was the topseller of the week with nearly 200,000 units sold. Winning Eleven 2009,like the PS2 version, sold roughly 100,000 units this week. Beyondthose two big two titles, Final Fantasy Dissidia, Monster HunterPortable 2G (the re-release) and Zill continue to hang on to positionsin the preliminary data. A title which translates as Battle ZoneSourita also charted with sales of about 6,000 units. Expect PSPhardware sales to rise to the 50,000 to 65,000 unit range this week.

DS Software – DS had five games in the preliminarydata. Square-Enix had the top DS game of the week. Final FantasyCrystal Chronicles sold 118,000 units according to the preliminarydata. Interestingly, with this release and three other games over100,000 units this week on other platforms, a lot of DS games known fortheir legs saw fairly dramatic sales drops. Pokemon Platinum and RhythmHeaven Gold were the only other games to sell 10,000 units or more forthe platform this week. Expect DS hardware sales to rise into the60,000 to 75,000 unit range this week.
