Japan has its next million selling title - Pokemon Heart Gold & Soul Silver. The game's enormous debut was actually substantially hampered by shortages though. See how the PS3 Slim did week two.
Summary and a Look Ahead:
Nintendo’s latest dual entry in the Pokemon series is off to a strong start. In only two days of sales, the game sold 1.69m units. This figure is actually lower than expected, as final preorders got to 1.50m or so. However, the data suggests the game had a sell out. Normally, it would be absurd to under ship a Pokemon game, since not expecting Pokemon to perform well is like expecting the sun not to rise tomorrow – but Heart Gold and Soul Silver come with pedometers that allow players to level up their monsters while walking. Nintendo probably couldn’t make the 2.5m or 3.0m pedometers necessary to insure demand would be met week one – hence the shortages. Going by preorders as an estimate, since week one usually equals final preorders * 1.5,  demand for the game was likely about 2.25m week one.
Aside from Pokemon shortages, the big story of the week is the low software sales for PS3 despite the recent upswing in hardware sales. Only a handful of PS3 games sold over 3,000 units this week. Interestingly, PSP software has come in much lower this week and last week than in previous weeks, so there could be some significant cross-over between money normally spent on PSP going to PS3. PSP purchasing could also be slowing as many choose to hold out for the PSP Go release in the fall. The Pokemon bump this week should go a long way towards determining whether the DS and PSP models will be close over the holidays.
In the upcoming weeks, it will be interesting to see if Tales of Vesperia can help PS3 hardware and/or software, as it looks like the game can top 250,000 week one. Final Fantasy XIII preorders, which officially begun only recently in the wake of the game’s December release have shot up nicely. Nonetheless, the game has only 120,000 preorders at the moment.
Understanding the Japanese Preview:
Rather than saying x game for y platform sold between 20,000 and 28,000 units as in the past, the preliminary data will be broken down into charts by platform. Within these charts, there will two additional categories besides the rounded sales figure under ‘sales’. On the left will be ‘low end’ depicting the lowest amount the title likely sold for the week, while to the right will be ‘high end’ depicting the highest amount the title likely sold for the week. As always, this data is preliminary, and therefore, not final, but it is based on a sample. The varying platform market share the sample represents is why consistent sellers like Wii Fit do not always appear in the preliminary data. Sales for this report are for the week ending September 13, 2009.
Software by Platform:
Wii Software – Wii Sports Resort and Monster Hunter 3 were the only Wii games to chart in the preliminary data. Resort added another 33,000 units to its total this week. Monster Hunter 3 fell to 9,000 units, although it may be a tiny bit higher in the final data if any controller + game skus are left on shelves. Expect Wii hardware sales to remain in the 17,000 to 22,000 unit range for the week.

Monster Hunter 3 (Game sku only)9,0007,00011,000
PS3 Software -  Five PS3 games charted in the preliminary data. Four of the games were best editions of old titles, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, MGS4, Valkyrie Chronicles, and Devil May Cry 4. The recently released Gundam Senki fell to about a seventh of what it did last week, a harsher than usual drop for an HD title. Call of Duty was actually the second best selling PS3 game in the data – at 13,000 units, though I’m a suspicious this figure will hold up in the final data. Expect PS3 hardware sales to fall into the 50,000 to 70,000 unit range this week, as previous massive spikes for the system, such as when the demo of Final Fantasy XIII released in the spring unaccompanied by compelling software pushed PS3 up to 60,000 for a single week, before sales returned to levels a third as high.

X360 Software – No X360 titles charted in the preliminary data. Expect X360 hardware sales to rise into the 6,000 to 9,000 unit range for the week on its recent price drop.
PS2 Software – SD Gundam G Generation Wars was the only PS2 game to chart in the preliminary data. It sold another 4,000 units for the week. Expect PS2 hardware sales to remain in the 2,500 to 4,500 unit range.

PSP Software – The PSP had a very quiet week for software, with not a single title over 10,000 units. Non-bundled sales of Monster Hunter Portable 2G Best came in at 8,000 units, topping all other PSP games. In addition to the PS3 uptake and PSP Go launch hurting current PSP sales a bit; there are usually drops for DS or PSP when the other sees a big release that isn’t matched. Expect PSP hardware sales to drop into the 19,000 to 23,000 unit range.

DS Software – According to the preliminary data, Gold was the more popular version of Pokemon. The Pokemon Heart Gold sku sold 860,000 units for the week, as compared to 823,000 for the Soul Silver sku. Well beneath these two was Tamodatchi Collection which came in at 79,000 units for the week. Dragon Quest IX fell to 38,000 units, which is quite an impressive figure for an rpg in its 10th week. Love Plus, Penguin no Mondai, and Puyo Puyo 7 all came in between 5,000 and 15,000 units, and Chibi Robo added another 3,000 units to its total. Expect DS hardware sales into the 80,000 to 110,000 unit range on the Pokemon Platinum debut.
